You can make this blanket any size and with any weight yarn. The sky's the limit.

Thanks so much for the instructions! I think I'm going to make a shawl - it should be nice :& warm since it will be worn doubled!

I don't have any babies to knit for. Do you think it would be weird to knit something (not this blanket) and give it to an expectant mother that I hardly know? We're just nodding acquaintances. That's the only person I know of who is having/had a baby!
